I am not totally pleased with the ray gun part of this piece (see previous post). I DO like the mount and the brass bit at the swivel in the center, but....

So, I had to go over to Astoria today and was thinking about perhaps finding some bits at the Astoria Vintage Hardware architectural salvage store. After I finished my Home Depot chores and bought food at Costco, I headed on into town to see what Paul might have. Well BLESS HIM, he took me back to the back of the shop and opened a secret room to me where he stashes juicy bits and said "dig around in here, see what you can find". WOW, how cool is that! This is what I came out of there with:

This shows part of the process of constructing one of these things. I see now that the ray gun pedestal (part of a vent from an old Spartan trailer) is way out of proportion, so, by now it has been modified. This truck will be constructed and de-constructed many times before it is finished.

Ellen has gone to live in subtropical Eastern Australia in the North of New South Wales (click and zoom out a bit). Not much call for wool coats there, so this coat is one of the things she left here for me to try to sell. She bought it a few years back at a high roller women's retail store in Chicago.

This heavy wool coat with 6 buttons measures 50 inches from the collar fold behind the label (above) to the bottom hem in the back and as I mentioned is a size 12. Lining is in perfect little used well-stored condition.

Someone make me an offer on this...please? How about starting at a hundred bucks? The money (well maybe minus a cheeseburger) will go into an envelope as a surprise post for Ellen in Australia...

Going traveling? Here are a few great tips from RVersCorner:

Empty your wallet on to the photocopier before you leave home. Photocopy all the contents including credit cards, health cards, auto insurance and registration, phone numbers or addresses, drivers license.

Toss in your passport, pet vaccination certificates as well. That way, if your wallet is stolen or lost you will know immediately what has to be canceled or replaced, and the copies may provide a substitute in the interim.

Carry the copies in a separate bag/vehicle, or swap copies with your traveling partner so the copies do not go missing too. Do the same with your key rings. List all the keys on the ring and what they are for - so you will know what to replace. If needed on the road, you may want to consider making duplicates and carrying them separately.

Personally, I will use my HOME scanner as some commercial scanners have hard drives in them that STORE THE INFORMATION - you wouldn't want THAT to happen, would you?

1979 GMC 3500 1 ton - dual wheels, diamond plate bed, new wheel bearings and seals, Goodwrench rebuilt 350 with turbo 400 transmission.

Waiting for a new speedometer to arrive via USPS then ready to load up with aluminum and other scrap metal, hook on to the 17 foot trailer already loaded with iron and tin, and head on out to Metro Metals in Portland!

PS- speedometer (which did need to be replaced) arrived and NOW I learn that the problem might be in the speedometer gear in the transmission tail shaft. Today I will pull the driveline and tailshaft to have a look.

NEW (1976) ENGINE/TRANS FOR OUR OLD (1965) CHEVROLET MOTOR HOME

I finally got all the bolt holes where I wanted them (new rear auto trans crossmember, new motor mounts etc.) NEXT up is figuring out the HYDRO-BOOST brake/steering, front end steering parts, and hopefully a tilt-tele steering column. Then around back to pull the 1965 rear end assembly out and put in the new '76 Eaton rear end with great big brakes, which will work great with the '78 front disk setup I already swapped in.

Engine came from a 76 motor home. low mileage great wet/dry compression, 4 bolt main, double hump heads.

Doing this alone, I used a chain come-along, a bigass old time chainfall, and a rope fence stretcher pulley to pull it toward the back (3 times!).

Once a month or so, we take ourselves and our old Taurus wagon on a shopping trip to the nearest major metropolis(?), which is the Astoria, Oregon area to stock up on food and other necessaries. It can be a long day, as the shops we hit are far and wide. Some small shops in town and some 'big box' stores outside town in the new shopping areas.
It is not unusual to have grey, damp weather testing the wipers on the car (don't get me wrong, this truly IS a lovely place to live, and the sun DOES come out often). Once in a while the sun does a miraculous thing, here at the mouth of the Columbia River and we are fortunate enough to capture it:

Yesterday (Saturday 12 Feb) we went to Astoria for our monthly shopping trip. We went to see about getting a leather bag repaired at the leathersmith shop in the Uppertown station on the East side of Astloria Oregon:

Right next to the uppertown station building is the walkway to the old net shed on the Columbia River known as BIG RED. This was originally a fisherman's co-op net repairing/drying shed which fell into disrepair over the generations. Some time ago it was bought and turned into artist loft and etc spaces.

Couple years ago a huge storm blew through and took the top off it (with people inside!). I understand that there are artists spaces in it again, though I don't see how.

I hope it withstood the huge blow that came through the area last evening as it was a true white knuckle driving experience, and I feared for any mariners out in the river or the ocean beyond.

I got it the few miles home with only one of the tires going POP (no sense stopping to see what happened, rather obvious and nothing to be done but continue). Now it is parked in our side yard on the South side of the house. My PLAN was to remove all of the interior fittings, lumber, furniture, appliances down to the aluminum skin and supporting ribs with the floor. THEN, I had hopes of removing the center 18 feet of this 33 foot long (it is called a 35' trailer because they include the towing tongue). and attach the front and rear curved bits to make a cute little "canned ham" vintage type trailer.

As it turns out, the 60 years this poor old Spartan (above and in the previus post) spent here on the Washington coast has not been kind to it, and I find it to be seriously not restorable in any way. BUT! I have just hatched a new plan! Just as the OTHER 35 foot Spartan is our art studios on the North side of the property here.

I am not sure why the one, pictured below with our studios in it survived so much better in the same climate.

What IF I were to take the 'empty' 35 foot Spartan and block it up out back somewhere, run electrics, including a big-honkin' 220 Volts to it and make it into a METAL ARTS studio?

I have always wanted to be a crazy old metal sculptor, but so far, all I have of THAT dream is the "crazy old" part.

I keep receiving inspirations to go ahead with it. The latest came in an email today from a friend who is a noted photographer where he sends pictures from the noted metal artist named James Corbett. THESE guys are MASTERS of their art. Maybe it IS crazy, and for sure, MY metal art will go a different direction, but since this place does NOT seem to be selling in order for us to get gone to New Zealand, we figure we should just live our lives as we see fit since the place IS paid for...

It's a 1951 Spartan, just like the one we use for our art studios, only it is 5 feet shorter at 30 feet. It's rough, not sure what to do with it yet. It sat there next to the old pump house shed for 60 years until I came along and rescued it. First on the list is to get it home without the coppers stopping me. Click the pic to biggify.

Alrighty then. I finally got it home! 20 miles per hour for about 3 miles. One tire went POP! on the way - I did NOT stop to see what had happened. "just takin' my new treasure home...
This one is 30 feet long. The one with studio in it is exactly like this only in good condition and 5 feet longer.
My intention with this one is to take both END pieces and fit them together on a 12 foot frame as the cutest little "canned ham" trailer you ever saw, and sell off the bits in between (already getting emails from guys for parts)

Finally finished the "Crazy Trailer". Towed it up to my pal's second hand store. It sold for full price ($1600.00) second day of display! I am going up to get it to tow to new owners' house, and will get more glam shots (interior) to insert into this story.

Well, low and behold, hoo woulda thunk it, but one day Ellen went to pick it up and a pair of little chickadees were raising a family of 4 little tiny chirping babies under it!

Thanks for stopping by. I am really pleased with this newest assemblage.

This little beauty stands about 25 inches tall. The base is part of a very very old vacuum cleaner with the end bit from an OLD Milwaukee Sawzall. Ellen has been after me to make and accumulate a large body of work in order to get into a nice gallery - perhaps in Astoria or Cannon Beach Oregon.

While driving into town (Ocean Park) the other day to salvage another load of old clear grain, rough cut fir 2x4's from a demo/remodel site, I stopped and took a picture of one of the trees that fell across the highway during the last big wind storm here:

Here is the pile that I waded in to to get the salvage rough cut lumber:

The builders had cut the roof loose in sections and thrown them to the ground. I had to knock/tear/rip the sections of 1x with cedar shingles on them loose to extract the lumber I wanted. You can not BUY lumber like this these days. There are still a ton of nails in it, but it will rip out into some real nice stuff! What is not re-usable for lumber will warm the workshop.

I am hoping to build a cute little cottage or cabin on the used RV trailer (caravan) frame where I have stacked my booty. The 1951 SPARTAN trailer you see is 2 art studios and a small gallery. Also showing one of my garage doors.
More to come as this project (among others) develops...

Today I had to make a trip over to Warrenton, Oregon to return something at the new Costco store. It was only noon as I was heading back home, so I decided to make a few stops along the Washington side of the River and search for some driftwood. I found several prime sticks to make a hand-rail, a few garden benches, and other who-knows-what-yet. I call it shopping at the stick store. I have always wanted to climb down to the River by the East end of the Chinook tunnel

and snoop around there, so I did that today.

This first one is of the old timey railroad tunnel looking West toward the tunnel from hiway 101. Old Fort Columbia sits above the old tunnel which the hiway runs through nowadays. Not long after this old timey picture was taken, there was a roadway built around the point of land there on pilings of wood. That must have been one slippery dangerous drive out to catch the old Megler ferry! I climbed down to what appears to be a cove in the distance on the right:

While there snooping around (I did find a couple of prize driftwood sticks) I discovered an old giant growing out of the rocky hillside which most of the tourists and others whizzing past on the pavement mere feet away are unaware of.

STUDIO/GALLERY TOUR

Yesterday I posted a comment over at THE STEAMPUNK HOME about the portholes in my garage doors. I built this garage and stuck these stainless steel portholes into it many many years ago. The portholes measure about 22 1/2 inches across on the outside. They are actually not "portholes", rather, they are the doors from old commercial dryers at a laundromat that went out of business down in Seaside Oregon (I am an incurable scrounger and "crap stacker", taught by masters). I have enough portholes to put one in each of the panels, but only one of the remaining 4 are of stainless steel, so have not installed them for not knowing how to get any sort of rust preventative UNDER the rubber glass seal next to the metal. If you have any tips, please don't hesitate...

The front of the garage is 24' across.

you can see that I simply cut the hole to fit

and secured the dryer door from the inside

using copious amounts of

Having a mellow Saturday evening watching a couple closing items on Ebay - looks like two different women want the jackets and blouses. I LOVE a little bidding war.
ANYHOW, I have been scanning and whatnot some of the little tags I collect off different items. I find them on old drills, vacuum cleaners, automobiles, caravans (trailers). Usually the older stuff. Some are pretty classy, and nearly all of them are from an era past.

My friend Bob is cleaning up his property, so I went by to see about picking up this cute little 1957 14 foot UNIFLITE runabout boat. If you hurry, you can bid on it on Ebay!
Now, just what I DON'T need is a BOAT which is defined as a hole in the water into which one pours money. I am thinking I can either clean it up and EBAY it, as this brand of fiberglas boat was known as a heck of a good boat, or give it away to some other sucker. As it turns out, this is not the trailer for it. I found the old trailer back in the weeds and got the wheels off it. They are in my shed now waiting to see if I think they will hold air long enough to get the thing home.

So then, I had to sit and have a beer with Bob, which is enjoyable enough, but I also had to watch him show me how to massage a chicken into napping on one's lap. Not MY lap, mind you...

So...today, we took the old motorhome over to Les Schwab's in Warrenton, near Astoria to get the front end aligned. After that we ran down to the outlet mall in Seaside then back to Costco for gas and then on home. Getting it ready for a run to Camas for my 45th year high school reunion. I always get in a rocking good mood when out in our great old 65 Chev truck house-car. With that in mind, I leave you to enjoy some rockabilly music and some great pix of excellent rat-rods. I love this shit.

Here are my vintage RV's: 1965 Chevrolet C-30 Caveman motorhome (my baby truck), and 1951 35' Spartan. I just took the Caveman out of the shed to clean it up for a trip out to my 45th class reunion. It has been inside in storage for so long that the new master cylinder (from the NEW front disk brake conversion I did 4 years ago) got condensation in it and rusted on the inside. SO I had to put a NEW new master cylinder in it (being down to our bones, I bought a rebuilt). The trailer is a beauty, and houses my gallery and Ellen and Me's art studios. The other day, Ellen and I were talking about our art. She suggested that I could make smaller, more manageable sized pieces that people could actually see themselves carrying out to the car and taking home with them. Small enough that I could begin amassing a "body of work".

Today, I present the first of this series. THIS is Surgeyo. He is 10 1/2 inches tall to the top of his antique dusting brush hair. I hope you like him! I expect to begin putting prices on them as I build up that body of work that I mentioned.

Vintage Miniature Jet Packs? AN UPDATE:

Having been inspired by noted Kiwi robot Jet-pak authority Martin Horspool, I had mounted a jet-pak on the back of my latest project. Honestly, I know better than to mount ANY plastic jet-pak on something seriously heavy, so am working on an aluminum one for this project.
You can see that the new one is more appropriate and will really be fine when polished, mounted and calibrated. I intend to put propellors on the little gizmo's sticking to the sides from the top of the rear wheel shafts...
